Frisian Astronomy: The Ancient Star Names That Mapped the Northern Sky

Before GPS and before compasses were common, Frisian sailors had to find their way across dark North Sea waters using nothing but the stars above them. And they didn’t just use any old star names. They had their own.

Frisian astronomy is one of those hidden corners of the language that most people never hear about. While everyone knows about Greek and Arabic star names, Frisian sailors and farmers developed their own system for tracking the night sky. And some of these names are way more poetic than what we use today.

Take the North Star, for example. In Frisian, it’s called the “Noardstjerre” which is pretty straightforward. But the interesting part is how Frisians used it. Sailors would measure the angle of the North Star above the horizon to figure out their latitude. No fancy equipment needed, just their hands and eyes.

The Pleiades star cluster, which most languages name after Greek mythology, has a Frisian name that’s much more practical: “Sûkelhinnechien” or “Seekelhintsjes” in some dialects. Orion’s Belt had Frisian names too, though they varied by region. Some called it “De Trije Keningen” (The Three Kings), linking it to the biblical story. Others called it “De Trije Maaiers” (The Three Mowers), because the stars looked like farmers working in a line across a field.

The Milky Way gets an especially cool Frisian name: “Himmelpaad” or “Himmelspaad,” meaning “Heaven’s Path” or “Sky Path.” Some older Frisians called it “Sântejegopaad” (Saint James’s Path) because medieval pilgrims believed the Milky Way pointed the way to Santiago de Compostela.

What makes Frisian star names special is how practical they were. These weren’t just pretty names for poets. They were navigation tools. A farmer knowing when certain stars appeared could tell him when to plant crops. A sailor watching specific constellations could find his way home.

The practice of Frisian astronomical naming wasn’t just about stars either. The phases of the moon had specific names tied to farming and fishing cycles. Different moons meant different activities. The spring moon had a different name than the harvest moon, and both had different associations than what you’d find in English or Dutch.

Sadly, a lot of these traditional star names have been lost. When Frisian started losing ground to Dutch in official settings, astronomical terms were some of the first to go. Science education happened in Dutch, so Dutch (and Latin and Greek) star names took over.

But some older Frisians still remember the traditional names. And there’s a small movement among Frisian language enthusiasts to document and preserve these astronomical terms before they disappear completely.

Why does this matter? Because it shows how Frisians developed their own scientific vocabulary completely independently. They didn’t just borrow Greek myths or Latin terminology. They looked at the sky and named what they saw based on their own experiences and culture.

It’s also a reminder that science and local languages can coexist. You don’t need to abandon your native tongue to understand the universe. Frisians proved that for centuries.

Modern Frisian astronomers and science communicators are trying to revive some of these old terms. There are Frisian-language planetarium shows now. Some schools teach basic astronomy in Frisian. It’s a small effort, but it’s keeping the tradition alive.

The coolest part? Some Frisian star names are actually more descriptive than their English equivalents. When you call the Pleiades “little hen with chicks,” you immediately know what to look for. That’s better than memorizing “Pleiades” without knowing what it means.

Next time you look up at the night sky, imagine you’re a Frisian sailor in the 1600s. No instruments except your eyes. No maps except the stars. Just you, your boat, and the Himmelpaad stretching across the darkness above you, showing you the way home.

That’s the beauty of Frisian astronomy. It turned the unreachable cosmos into something familiar, something useful, something wonderfully human.
